DETERMINE WHAT YOU HAVE

Reel to reel tape (or open reel tape) came in many shapes & sizes. The most common to the average consumer was 1/4" tape. Reel-to-reel tape also came in other sizes but was reserved mostly for the professional recording market. To determine what you have, simply measure the tape, the actual tape not the reel. It should measure 1 quarter of an inch in width. (Not thickness). We transfer all 1/4" reel-to-reel tape to CD.

THE REEL SIZE

Reel-to-reel tape came on many different sizes of reels. Most common among these are 3 inch, 5 inch and 7 inch. Larger 10 1/2 inch reels were also made but not as common to the home user. Here at Reel 2 Reel 2 CD we transfer all reel sizes. To determine what size reel you have, lay it down on a table and measure across the surface of the reel as close to the middle as possible, as if you are measuring a plate. Your measurement may not be exactly the measurements above but it will be very close to one of them. (See photo) Pricing here at Curtis Media Transfer is based primarily on reel size. Reel-to-reel tapes that are not full of tape are priced by how much tape, not how big the reel is.

DETERMINING THE COST

When viewing our pricing please keep in mind that it is all-inclusive. For example a 7 inch reel is $40.00 to transfer. If your tape is longer than 80 minutes (all that a CD will hold) and requires, for example, 3 CD's, you will get a set of 3 CD's for $40.00. That also includes tape baking, track marking, splicing, repairing, hiss hum and noise reduction, data CD instead of audio CD, downloading or streaming your tapes audio and more. (Note: Only one output choice comes with price of transfer. Additional outputs are $7.00 each).

Return shipping is a flat $11.00.

Frequently Ask Questions

  • What kind of reel-to-reel do you transfer?
All quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape recorded mono, stereo, half-track, 2 track, and four track mono.

  • Will I be charged if my my tapes are blank?
No. If you want the tape back there will be a return shipping fee of $11.00

  • I don't know what is on my tapes, what can you do to help?
With our free preview service we can email you short  mp3 samples taken from your tapes. If you decide not to have your tapes transferred after hearing the samples there is no charge at all other than having your tapes returned to you. And that is optional. See details on orderform

  • How many tapes fit onto one CD?
First, a CD can hold 80 minutes of audio. So as long as a reel-to-reel tape is under 80 minutes it will fit on one CD.  In many cases, a reel-to-reel tape is longer than 80 minutes. This depends on the size of the reel, how much tape is on the reel, the speed the tape was recorded at, the thickness of the tape, and, how the reel-to-reel tape was recorded. (Mono, stereo, 4 track mono, both directions .) These factors all play into the over all length and quality of your tapes final transfer. Of course you do have the option of having your reel-to-reel tapes transferred to CD, DVD, Blu ray or flash drive as data.

  • What is sticky shed and could my tapes have it?
Sticky Shed Syndrome is a condition higher quality tapes from the  late 70's and 80's can have. Usually, if your reel-to-reel tapes were not recorded in a professional studio, you don't have to worry about sticky shed. If they were, and if they do have Sticky Shed, we will bake your tapes at no cost to you.  After the baking process the tapes will be as good as new. (for 30 days or so.) If you think your tape might have sticky shed, do not try to play them! Playing tapes with Sticky Shed without baking them will ruin them. Tapes by the brand "Ampex" commonly have Sticky Shed. Tapes originating from a studio or radio station commonly have sticky shed.

  • Do you sell reel-to-reel decks?
No. You can try A-V Specialist. They also repair decks.

  • Will my finished CD have track markers?
Yes. Track placement is determined by the technician who edits your audio. NOTE > If you  have classical music or opera transferred your track markers may not be correct. We do not charge for nor guarantee track placement. Just audio transfer quality. When playing your CD from start to finish you will not know where tracks are. (No space or gap between tracks.) If we get it wrong, don't hesitate to give us a call. We stand by our work.

  • How much audio can a reel-to-reel hold?
That is not so easy to answer. Reel-to-reel tape decks did not have just one speed  like cassettes. They played from 1-3/8 inches per second, 3/34 inches per second 7 1/2 inches per second and more. Then, if that's not enough, there was many different sized reels. From 3" to 10.5". Each holding more tape. But wait, one more thing, thickness of tape. Some companies made very very thin reel-to-reel tape and bragged about how much more for your money you could get. And some made thicker tape and bragged about quality. Oh but wait, there was many different ways a reel-to-reel tape could have been recorded: Mono, stereo or four track mono or a combination of stereo and four track mono. See, reel-to-reel tapes have sides. Side 1 and Side 2.  Then they have tracks. Left and Right Side 1 and Left and Right Side 2. A person could have recorded on left and right together for stereo recordings, or use left and right separately for 4 track mono. So to sum this up, it is really impossible to predict how much audio is on your reel-to-reel tapes. That is why we charge by the reel. Weather your tape takes 6 CDs or 1 to hold all of the audio it is going to be the same price. No surprises.

  • Do you offer a bulk discount?
    Yes, 10% after 25-30 tapes. 15% after 30-50 tapes. 20% after 50-75. 25% 75-100

  • How long does it take?
First I would like to say we are always willing to work with your deadline. So if you have a special need please call us and let us know and we will work with you. We enjoy helping people make an occasion special for a loved one. Now the standard answer: 10 days. If you have many tapes it could take longer.

Family & Reel-to-Reel

Back in the day you could make  videos of your family events on a silent 8mm camera, but you could not record the sound. Thatís where reel-to-reel decks came in. Load the reel, hit record, and let the kids go nuts. Today those kids are in their 60's and hearing their small voices is simply amazing! Hearing mom and dad in their 20's or 30's! Again amazing! No one thought back then that in sixty years these reel-to-reel tapes would be transferred into magic disc's that played amazing sounds. Reel-to-reel decks were like priceless time machines with all their buttons and switches and spinning reels. They were time machines that mom and dad didn't even know they owned. Only today do those spinning reels become tearful eyes and joyful amazement. That is of course, after they've been transferred to CD.

War & Reel-to-Reel

During the 60's a war raged in Vietnam. Americas involvement caused many of our young men and women to be far from their family and in a very dangerous place. Communicating with family was next to impossible. Because of Vietnam's close proximity to Japan, where most reel-to-reel decks were made, soldiers could get a reel-to-reel deck and tapes on the cheap. They would use these decks to record  audio letters to mom and dad, or maybe that special lady. Can you imagine? Your son is off thousands of miles away in the most dangerous place in the world, you're sitting at the kitchen table, you push a button and there's his voice, "Hi mom, hi dad, I'm okay." Amazing! Perhaps not a time machine, but a cure for the worried soul. Those tapes still exist today, hiding in worn old boxes and plastic tubs waiting to be heard again, ready to be that amazing time machine.

Marriage & Reel-to-Reel

Imagine it's 1957, Eisenhower is president. You can get a gallon of gas for .27 cents and Elvis Presley is all the rage. But best of all it's your wedding day. Friends and family are gathered, flowers are in  place and there's a TEAC reel-to-reel deck set up in the back of the church. Microphone placed just right. Now this is one of the most special days of your life. That's why the ceremony is being recorded. You wrote your vows and  he wrote his and soon all present will hear them. You will go from being  boyfriend and girlfriend  to man and wife. The ceremony starts and the record button on the TEAC is pushed in. From that point, your wedding day is being copied word for word via one microphone placed just right. You never imagined that in the year 2017 you would hear these sounds again. From the vows to the powerful "I Do". It's sounds almost unbelievable to hear it. You're pulled back 60 years. You're amazed.
