Your Memories Are Safe With Us
We specialize in transferring reel-to-reel tape
to CD. We have done this since 1999 and are
confident that no where else will you find a staff of
more knowledgeable and professional people to help
you recover the hidden sounds on your
reel-to-reel tapes. |
|
Determining what you have. |
Reel to reel tape
(or open reel tape) came in many shapes
&
sizes. The most common to the average consumer was 1/4" tape. Reel-to-reel
tape also came in other sizes but was reserved mostly for the professional
recording market. To determine what you have, simply measure the
tape, the actual tape not the reel. It should measure 1 quarter of an inch
in width. (Not thickness). Here at Reel 2 Reel 2 CD we transfer all 1/4"
reel-to-reel tape to CD.
Next,
reel-to-reel tape came on many different sizes of reels. Most common among
these are 3 inch, 5 inch and 7 inch. Larger 10 1/2 inch reels were
also made but not as common to the home user. Recording studio demo tapes
and radio/ television programs more commonly used these sizes. Here at
Reel 2 Reel 2 CD we transfer all reel sizes. To determine what size reel
you have, lay it down on a table and measure across the surface
of the reel as close to the middle as possible, as if you are measuring a
plate. Your measurement may not be exactly the measurements above but it
will be very close to one of them. See the photo to the right for example.
Pricing here at Reel 2 Reel 2 CD is based primarily on reel size. Reel-to-reel
tapes that are not full of tape are priced by how much tape, not how big
the reel is.
Determining the cost can be confusing, but
it does not have to be.
Here is how it works:
We primarily charge by the size of the reel. But because reel-to-reel
tapes came in different thicknesses, and because they can be recorded at
different speeds utilizing separate tracks, not every
reel-to-reel tape yields the same
amount of audio. One 7"
reel-to-reel could produce 45 minutes
of audio while another
reel-to-reel could produce 6 hours!
Big difference. So the way our pricing handles these different situations
is, we charge the base price according to the size of reel and then $5 for
each extra CD needed to complete the transfer. Keep in mind a CD will only
hold 80 minutes of audio. So, one 7"
reel-to-reel with 45 minutes of audio
will cost the base price plus return shipping. A 7"
reel-to-reel with 90 minutes of audio
would cost the base price plus $5 and return shipping. Smaller 3" and 4"
tapes will usually be just their base price.
Duplicate
CD's for family & friends.
If you would like to get extra CDs to share with friends and family they
are only $5 each. Also, if you want to make the copies yourself go ahead.
We do not do anything to your CDs to prevent you from making your own
copies.
Also you might want to consider sending in
or bringing in a photo to be printed on your CDs. There is no extra charge
for that. We can also print a title of your choosing onto the CDs. Just
let us know.
If you are afraid of sticker shock and are
not sure how much audio your
reel-to-reel tapes hold, or if other
factors might be involved, we offer free preview samples. We digitize your
reel-to-reel tapes, make you a special
web page with short MP3 samples, total playing time and short descriptions
of your
reel-to-reel tapes audio. This allows
you to know the cost and content up front. If the
reel-to-reel tapes are not what you
thought, just say no thanks.

Is there anybody out there? |
Once you have decided what you have, and
decided you would like to have it transferred to CD go ahead and fill out
the order form and give us a call
1-800-617-8273. Even if you don't have any questions this may help you
feel better about sending your tapes off to "some website". Of
course this is totally optional.
Now for shipping. First we want you to
know right up front that no reel-to-reel tapes have ever been lost in transit to us
or from us. Also,
after we digitize your reel-to-reels for the first time we keep a digital copy of
your reels on hard drives here for 30 days. This means if something was to
happen on the return trip or you needed additional copies, we could simply
pull up our back-up files and remake the CDs.
Also, when you fill out your order form we
receive an electronic copy right away in our email. So we know who is
sending what. If something doesn't arrive in a timely manner we
investigate.
Safe Shipping
Tips: We understand sending your irreplaceable reel-to-reel tapes to
us for transfer can be a scary task. With a few steps of caution your
reel-to-reel
tapes can arrive just as safely as driving them across town. In
over ten years of doing mail order business we have never had a clients
reel-to-reel
tapes lost or damaged in the mail. The purpose of this information is to
share with you what we have learned over the years. These are not just our
opinions.
- Do not use envelopes of any kind
to ship your
reel-to-reel tapes. They are prone
to rip open during delivery. This includes the Priority envelopes the
post office gives out. It seems like the logical choice for just one
reel-to-reel or small
reel-to-reels but please refrain.
The post office will give you free boxes when shipping Priority mail.
-
Do not use Media Mail.
"Media Mail" is a form of third class mail the post office uses for
shipping books, tapes and other forms of media. Your
reel-to-reel tapes would qualify for
this type of transportation but we do not recommend you use it.
Considering what you are mailing this is no time to pinch a penny.
-
Don't forget your Return
address. Please make sure you have supplied a legible return address
on the outside of the box. You should also have our order form on the
inside of the box with your contact information. It is important to have
an address on the inside and the outside of the box. If something was to
happen to the box that left the outside label unreadable, the shipper
will open the box and look for a shipping address inside. It is very
common for clients to forget to include the order form. So please, don't
forget the order form or at least a sheet of paper with your return
address.
-
Use
Priority Mail. We highly recommend the Priority Mail service offered
by your local post office. They will even supply you with a free box.
This is a great way to ship your tapes. In most cases your tapes will
arrive to us in 2 days. The less time your tapes have to travel the
better.
